Tekirdağ Roma Festival Celebrates Inclusion Under SİROMA Project
The “Tekirdağ World Roma Day Festival” was held on 6 May 2017 as part of the SİROMA Project (Social Inclusion of the Roma Population Project). The event brought together Tekirdağ Governor Mehmet Ceylan, Süleymanpaşa District Governor Arslan Yurt, Provincial Director of Family and Social Policies Hasan Yılmaz, representatives from numerous Roma associations, and local citizens.
Colorful Parade and Festive Atmosphere
Members of Roma associations gathered in front of Tekira Shopping Mall in Süleymanpaşa district and marched along Hükümet Street, accompanied by traditional Roma music and dance. The lively parade concluded at Tuğlalı Park, where a stage was set up for speeches and performances.
Addressing the crowd, Governor Mehmet Ceylan expressed his appreciation for the Roma community, stating: “We are here for you. We are actively working to address the needs and challenges of our Roma citizens in Tekirdağ. Today, we are celebrating this event in the true spirit of Hıdrellez.”
Promoting Social Inclusion Through SİROMA
Hasan Yılmaz, Provincial Director of Family and Social Policies, provided information about the project, explaining: “The SİROMA Project is implemented in 12 provinces under an agreement between the European Union and the Republic of Türkiye. It aims to reduce social risks in areas with high Roma populations through measures in employment, housing, education, and health. In Tekirdağ, we are successfully carrying out project activities.”
He added that some of the food served at the festival was prepared by participants of the culinary training courses organized under the project, showcasing Roma citizens’ new skills and employment opportunities.
Art, Photography, and Children’s Activities
The festival also featured an exhibition of award-winning photographs from the SİROMA Project’s photography contest. In addition, children’s workshops attracted great interest, providing creative and educational activities designed to foster social inclusion and awareness.
The event was widely regarded as a celebration of Roma culture, identity, and inclusion — reinforcing the SİROMA Project’s mission to improve living standards and strengthen the social participation of Roma communities across Türkiye.
