MISGEP Held Its Last Meeting with Employers and NGO Managers for the Mining Sector in Tekirdağ

Within the scope of MİSGEP, which is carried out by the General Directorate of Occupational Health and Safety (İSGGM) and financed by the European Union and the Republic of Turkey, in order to improve the occupational health and safety conditions in mining workplaces and to raise awareness in this field, “MİSGEP Mining Industry Consultation Meeting” covering 25 provinces in 7 regions of Turkey, held its last meeting in Tekirdağ. Tekirdağ Deputy Governor Dr. Osman Abdullah GÜNAYDIN, Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Bülent EKER, Head of Occupational Health and Safety Research and Development Institute, Mrs. Sakine OVACILLI, Tekirdağ Labor and Employment Agency Provincial Director Yaşar ESEN, Social Security Institution and KOSGEB representatives, mining enterprises serving in Tekirdağ region, OSGBs and senior managers of NGOs attended the meeting.

Tekirdağ Labor and Employment Agency Provincial Director Yaşar ESEN, who attended the opening session for his speeches, shared up-to-date information on the Tekirdağ labor market and the services that were provided, and said, “I wish the meeting held within the scope of MİSGEP, conducted by the General Directorate of Occupational Health and Safety, to be successful and useful.”

The President of the Occupational Health and Safety Research and Development Institute, Mrs. Sakine OVACILLI, put forward the general situation regarding workplaces and employers in Tekirdağ region and occupational health and safety, “The number of workplaces in Tekirdağ between 2013-2019 was 17.1% and the number of employees was 38.4% and increasing; Occupational accidents with death per hundred thousand decreased by 60.7% and showed an improvement above the average of Turkey (41.3%). Again, access to OHS services in the mining and quarrying sector increased 86.6 times for workplaces and 13.1 times for employees from 2013 to 2020, above the average of Turkey. Ans said, “we hope that Tekirdağ will offer a much healthier and safer working environment in the future on occupational health and safety.”

Participating in the meeting, Deputy Governor of Tekirdağ Dr. Osman Abdullah GÜNAYDIN ​​conveyed his thanks to the President of the Occupational Health and Safety Research and Development Institute, the MİSGEP team leader and all friends, with the wishes that MISGEP will be a beneficial and auspicious project for our province and all of Turkey.

In the consultation session of the meeting, MISGEP Team Leader Gökhan Güler and Instructor Dr. Hacer KAYHAN, studied examples from the World such as occupational health and safety practices in the mining sector, legal obligations regarding mining and administrative fines, compensation after work accidents, the effect of unionization on OHS, pneumoconiosis; the most common occupational disease in the industry. The cost and benefits of preventing work accidents. During the meeting, the opinions of the participants were taken after each topic.
